Feature and Follow Friday [14]

Feature and Follow Friday is a meme hosted by Parajunkee's View and Alison Can Read. This meme is a great way to meet new bloggers, and to likewise know more about them. Follow me and I'll be sure to follow you back!

Q: Do you mind books with similar ideas to other books? Similar concepts, backgrounds, retellings or pulled-to-publish fanfic?

Not really. I happen to adore retellings simply because I love how authors can add their own fresh twists on stories that we all know and love. I also don't mind reading stories with similar concepts either because the major plotlines usually differ, and each character has his own story to tell. I'm not too sure about pulled-to-publish fanfiction though...

  1. I feel the same way. Retellings and books that are similar in premise to ones I've already read don't really bother me unless they haven't added anything new to the original concept.

  2. Agreed. If done well with a fresh twist, they can be delightful. If they're obviously recycled, then they kinda suck. Great answer. :D Old follower via GFC. My FFs are at Musings on Fantasia and LKHill. Happy Friday! :D

  3. I am not a fan-fic fan at all. I don't read any of that stuff. But I don't mind a new spin on other stories if the author twists it around a little. Some stories are so universal that it’s almost a given that they will be retold, like The Iliad and the Odyssey. The story is an archetype of the hero’s journey.

  4. Great answer. I agree. Every character has their own story to tell.

  5. Totally agree! I don't mind retellings at all, as long as there's some sort of difference or twist to it. New follower via GFC! Almost 200 followers, pregratz! xD

  6. Hopping through. I don't necessarily have a problem with pulled to publish fanfic if it has enough originality to it.

  8. I'm really not sure about FanFiction, either. I love FanFiction, but would I want to pay for it? I don't really think so.. I might read original fiction written by a FF-author I already know, though.

    New GFC Follower! :)

  9. I agree with you. It's nice to read the same thing from different POVs. :)

I'm not a big fan of fanfic either. I don't mind reading books that are slightly similar either, because the story line as a whole is usually completely different.

  11. Yeah I love retellings as well, especially fairy tales and mythology!

I don't mind reading books with similar ideas or themes though. It's hard to be original these days, but authors can totally take a used idea and make it their own and it's literally a different story.

Of course I am noticing, which I did already knew--that we all have different opinions. One book may seem similar to another for one of us and another won't be able to see those similarities at all!

    Have a GREAT weekend!

  12. I'm with you on this. I think there are enough original twists on old tales to make the world keep spinning. Not a huge fanfic fan.

  13. Great answer. I completely agree.
Thanks for stopping by my FF and following. I'm an old follower :)

  14. Some retellings can be great - especially if the author takes an angle that's new and refreshing. New follower. Here's mine: My FF

  15. A good answer.

  16. As long as there is a unique story, I'm happy :) I've run into a couple books without that though, and then there are some problems...

I'm a new follower! Here is my FFF

  17. I do! I do! Because then I am comparing both books! I want to read unique ideas and development. I mean, a zombie concept is okay but I want each book to be original about it.

  18. Good answer! I adore retellings as well, and books with a fresh twist of an old story!
Thanks for stopping at my blog earlier!
